4 Tricky Truths that Make it Tough to be a Homeschool Mom
Is homeschooling hard?
I’m not going to lie … it is hard. And anyone who tells you differently isn’t telling the truth.
It’s also wonderful, glorious, delightful and exciting.
But I think we do a disservice to anyone who is learning about homeschooling to not tell the entire truth about homeschooling.
Because if you’re trying to decide about homeschooling …
If you’re trying to decide if homeschooling will be worth it -- what the benefits are ...
And you’re trying to figure out what the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling are -- you need someone to tell you both the good and the bad.
In today’s video, I’m covering four hard truths I’ve learned about homeschooling during the past 16 year...

I think most of this is a bit of bs, like some teenagers will want to be on a screen to interact with others, sometimes a screen can be an only eay to make friends or interact with friends you know. I wish this would be acknowledged.

I've been homeschooling from the start, and have always believed that the transcript was what mattered, not the diploma. However, now that I'm doing the college application process, I've discovered that the opposite is true in the case of our first-choice college. The college is not concerned with the transcript, but will not admit without a diploma, and proof of proper registration to homeschool with the state. The good news is, it's easy to make one's own diploma on a platform like Canva : ) (in either instance, accreditation is not an issue)

Hi Tori, Ive been struggling to remember a name of a book that was very similar to these, it was basically an illustration book showing whats below our streets, i remember it having an underground tube station also a page where they went as far down as hell. it was out back in the early 2000s and had similar drawing style. Any ideas or advice in finding the books name would be appreciated. Thank you

GREAT ADVICE!!! I agree with you ToriAnn. I've been homeschooling for 10 years and my experience teaching my son to read was drastically different than with my firstborn daughter. He struggled to read until about age 10. He's 11 now and finally falling in love with reading. I did all the things you mention in this video and with time and patience, it happened. I had to find the key to his motivation. I challenged him to read the entire Magic Tree House series for $100 and he's almost there. He also earns 1 min of screen time for every 1 minute he reads. He proudly told me today he's at 20 hours and he decided he's not going to track his time anymore. When he told me he has so many books he wants to read, it made my heart sing. Now he, his sister and I all travel with a book in the car. He even brought his copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to dinner out. When most kiddos these days have a device in their hand, my once reluctant reader now chooses to delight in a book. I look forward to sharing this new book series that you recommend with him. I'm perfectly okay with him reading books below his age level. He just needed some practice and confidence. Patience and reasonable expectations on my part was key. The All About Reading curriculum was also instrumental for him. Every kid is difference and they each have their own timeline for developing. I wish our society understood that.

Thank you for sharing candidly. The con you mentioned about feeling like you're cramming facts in at the Foundations level is why I chose to go with the Charlotte Mason method. Now that my oldest is 15 years old, I'm considering Challenge. I'm having a hard time finding a review of just the Challenge level. Many bloggers on RUclips have students in Foundations.

every study I ever heard about says that reading is best taught as early as possible and not when they start asking about it, I don't know where you got that info from but I think that's the 80s myth that also caused kids to not be potty trained by the time they have to go to school in the Netherlands and parents thinking that's normal even though in belgium all kids are toilet trained by the time they go to school when they're 2 and a half.

My 12 year old has been a huge problem with his screen time since we met him. It has been a massive challenge as he's adjusted from foster care to a real family (we're talking years, not months or weeks). Unfortunately, my 8 year old just started to behave in the same BS ways. She just said, "I did all that work for nothing??" When she was told that there isn't time for TV today because it was already dinner time. We're to the point now that I'm going to get rid of ALL the TV cords if they give me any of the BS again.

How well did these programs prepare your kids for future math programs, maybe outside of Mr.D's classes? Did you find these competitive/rigorous? Also, I noticed that not all of the teachers in Mr. D's staff are math teachers by degree. Did you feel all of the teachers were astute and highly competent? Thank you!
